Our Story
Hi! We're Sander & Cristina, co-founders of Selvática Eco Retreat. If you're just joining us now, you may not know that we built Selvática from the ground up. When we bought this beautiful nugget of land, it had nothing on it. It was raw and wild, the epitome of selvática; totally uninhabitable & unfit for building.
3 years ago we moved to Costa Rica & started our observation of the land. The first year we gardened, planted 50+ fruit trees in our fruit forest and put our efforts towards soil remediation in the form of hügelkultur beds. We brought in a backhoe multiple times for land movement to create accessible & walkable curves and building sites. We did this while we waited for the legalities of the sale of the land & subsequently the plans from our architects & our search for a builder. In February '22, we started construction on our dome area. Once completed, we moved onto the Jungle Shala and finally in September '22, we started the construction of our main building.

It feels surreal to describe this journey in just a few paragraphs for an Instagram post when in reality it was an all consuming rollercoaster of a journey. It tested us emotionally, physically, & mindfully, not to mention it tested the heck out of our brand new 7- month old relationship. At times it felt never-ending, unattainable which I think is why it took me so long to start sharing our journey on the gram.
Now, here we are. We have arrived at the end of this phase and it is unbelievable & emotional & amazing to look back at these old photos and see the progress in one post. So much so, that it is difficult to put into words. However if we had to put it into one word, it must be gratitude.
